Mark’s Message Mark Epstein, MD, President of True Health New Mexico WE’RE ALL IN THIS TOGETHER T he month of May was National Mental Health Month. As a physician, I believe every month should be Mental Health Month. I’m amazed that with all the progress our society has made toward accepting those with mental health issues, we still have far to go to understand, accept and reduce the stigma of mental illness. Stigma makes people who live with mental illness feel “less than” or “unseen” due to their condition. Sometimes they even feel blamed, discriminated against and looked down on—as if they could just “fix” themselves. Just as a person with cancer or rheumatoid arthritis can’t simply cure their illness, a person with a mental health issue cannot wish away depression or post-traumatic stress disorder. At True Health New Mexico, we believe good mental health is just as impor- tant as good physical health, and our members’ health plan benefits reflect that. Most of our plans offer a $0 copay for outpatient behavioral health visits. We offer a $0 copay on select generic drugs for mental health conditions so patients can more easily access the medications that help keep them well. And our care management programs include personalized help for people with mental health issues to help them in between visits. Benefits and programs aren’t enough; we must all do our part to reduce stigma. By encouraging open, honest and accepting talk about mental illness; being conscious of the words we use; showing compassion toward those with mental illness and their loved ones; and calling out stigmatizing behavior, we can make a difference and empower others to live stigma-free. T aking an active part in your healthcare is the best way to make sure you get the right care at the right time. Shared decision-making is a process that allows you and your doctor to make healthcare choices together. Shared decision-making helps you learn more about your conditions and ask better questions. At the same time, your doctor will get to know your values and preferences. A joint decision True Health New Mexico now offers a shared decision-making tool to use if you are think- ing about total knee or total hip replacement surgery. This tool will help you understand your treatment options and make smart choices about managing your knee or hip arthritis. Arthritis affects the cartilage in your joints. It causes joint pain and stiffness and can make it hard to move freely. Many people can manage their arthritis pain with nonsurgical treatments like medicine, exercise and physical therapy. However, for some people, these treatment options may no longer be effective. If your hip or knee pain is keeping you from daily activities, you may be wondering if total joint replacement surgery is right for you. Before deciding, you should understand all the benefits and risks. Use our shared decision- making tool to help you learn more about knee and hip arthritis and available treatments. Then take it to your doctor. Together, you can decide on the treatment that is best for you. Access the shared decision-making tool at truehealthnewmexico.com/forms-2.aspx or call our case management team at 844-691-9984 to have the tool mailed to you. Good healthcare begins with you
